Richie “Dick” Allen was born on March 8, 1942 in Wampum Pennsylvnaia and attended Wampum High School. He was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies and started his career on September 3, 1963.
Allen played first base, third base and left field. He won the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year and 1972 American League MVP. He also played for the White Sox, Dodgers, Cardinals and Athletics. His final game was June 19, 1977.
Richie’s two brothers, Hank and Ron were also pro ball players.
Allen was a controversial figure in his time, speaking his mind, combating racism and bucking the organizational hierarchy. Allen was also a R&B singer.
