Early Years of Black Cinema

“Films featuring Black performers and images at the beginning of the 20th century portrayed African Americans in insulting stereotypes. This program will take a look at and discuss some of these earlier performers and movies.”

Also, in the presentation will be Oscar Micheaux, often thought of as the father of African American filmmakers, an independent producer of more than 44 films both silent and talkies.

EVENT SPEAKER: S. Jean Speight
For several years, Historical Society member, S. Jean Speight, has been creating exciting programs for the Society for Black History Month. Mrs. Speight, a retired New Castle teacher, has presented programs locally, throughout Pennsylvania, and in other states. She frequently collaborates with board member, Stephanie Fulena, whom Mrs. Speight refers to as her “tech” person.
